polvoron day
In an effort to write shorter posts on this page, here's a snippet of today's polvoron-making session.
Today, me, Mama, and ate Len, made a batch of fresh polvoron for my Tita in Japan. She specifically requested polvoron with pinipig which are crunchy flakes made from toasted and flattened sticky rice grains.
We also made a batch of plain ones (without pinipig) since it's the most preferred by everyone in the house.
It's been a while since Mama made these moderately sweet, rotund treats. She used to make these as gifts for family and friends during the holiday season, so when took a bite, I was suddenly reminded of Christmas – back when we were at our old house, with all the ingredients sprawled at the table and the three of us siblings watching Mama molding each piece with dexterity and precision. Good times.
Also, I just found out today that polvoron is a Spanish-infuenced Filipino dessert with different variations across Latin America and Spain. I've been devouring these sweets for the longest time, and I had no idea that it's a colonial dessert! Pretty interesting to learn. I was today years old, so to speak. Heheh.
