My velvet pocket notebook

Reading with a paperback again

My Kobo and I have been inseparable since I had it last December, but now I’m trying to get back to reading physical books again. At the moment, I’m reading The Quiet Ones by Glenn Diaz from a paperback copy I bought a year ago.

The novel is about an organized embezzlement scheme in a BPO company told from the perspective of its mastermind. Diaz’s writing is rich and thick, but surprisingly punchy and engaging. As a Filipino, I can truly relate to how he paints 2010s Manila - from the ceaseless traffic, blistering heat, and the unlivable urban jungle.

I wasn’t planning on continuing to read on Kobo, but Stefan Zweig’s Beware of Pity just sucked me into its beautiful vortex. His writing feels like falling in love. It’s full of life, color, and spontaneity. It’s decadent, whimsical, yet so solid in terms of rhythym.

I’m 14% in, and I’m asking myself why haven’t I read or even heard of Zweig until this year?!

At this point, I’m not concerned what will happen next in the novel, because no matter what, I will still continue to read; to devour his beautiful writing.

Until my next update!
